Dick Francis, former jump racing jockey and international best-selling mystery writer, passed away earlier this year.

When I was coming up with headings for sections in this blog post, I decided to use some of his 41 titles.  Perhaps you’ll agree with the ones I chose, perhaps not. 😉 Here goes:

Perhaps you’ve heard, perhaps you haven’t, but honored and beloved jockey-turned-author Dick Francis passed away at the age of 89.

The London Telegraph’s website has a thorough obituary on Francis. Sarah Weinman, mystery author and crime fiction commentator, has posted a list of blogs referencing Francis’s passing.

Sarah’s post amounts to a virtual wake (Be sure to click on the on the link to Janet Rudolph’s blog for a charming story about her meeting with Francis.)

If you love to read Dick Francis novels, then we’ve got some great real-life online fun for you. Because this is a big week for what we Yanks might call “steeplechasing.”

This is Cheltenham National Hunt Festival week, culminating in running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a test of stamina, strategy, endurance and unflappability as teams of horse and rider head for the stretch in front of a grandstand of legendarily roaring fans.
