Sometimes crazy contests, goals and projects merge. Lexington, KY, was my home prior to moving to this suburb of Hartford. I like Lexington so much that I often return on vacation. Shh … that’s a secret.
The Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau has been running a contest involving social media. Tweet or Facebook your favorite things about Lexington with the hashtag #ILuvLex until later today. The prize is a free iPad.
I would love to have an iPad. I love to talk up Lexington and all its horsey fun. I’ve been posting Kentucky tourist tips in time for the 2010 World Equestrian Games.
I love it when a bunch of plans come together. Since some of you aren’t on Twitter or Facebook, I’d hate for you to miss out on these tidbits. So, I’m going to share them here.
Keep in mind that I’ve only Tweeted/Facebooked tips with which I’m familiar. Also, everyone one of them is 140 characters, tops, according to Twitter rules. So, here goes.
- Because it’s the best place to get close to a number of breeds of horses (shameless attempt to win an iPad – but all true.)
- Pastures with curious, romping yearlings or mares with foals. Blooming redbud in the spring, scarlet maples in the fall.
- Joseph-Beth Bookstore. I’ve been to a lot of book shops in a lotta towns. The Lex Joseph-Beths is my fave.
- UK sports! Go, Cats!
- For driving around in the historic neighborhoods around Transy and Gratz Park to see the historic homes.
- A road w/a legendary farm (Calumet), a gorgeous racetrack (Keeneland), racing mural (near LEX airport) and a castle: all on US60W
- For preserving Mary Todd Lincoln’s childhood home so I could wonder about a woman history has not showed kindness toward.
- Coffee (or tea) in one hand, pastry in the other, while standing at the rail at Keeneland to watch morning works.
- Keeneland aerobics: Down steps to paddock, watch saddling/riders-up, run up steps before they load, watch race from seat. Repeat.
- Lots of streets named for famous racehorses: Man O’War, Citation, Sir Barton, Bold Bidder, etc.
- Nice article about Lexington dining in Chicago Tribune. http://bit.ly/aeoc1I (thks @Big_Lex_KY)
On Facebook, I also mentioned that I love the Kentucky Horse Park. And I mentioned some fond memories of a night with friends at the late-great venue for music and drinks, the Jefferson Davis Inn. Known back in the day as “the JDI.”
Even if I don’t win the iPad, I’m absolutely tickled to list all these things I love about Lexington.
If you’re going to the Games, or the Kentucky Derby or for no particular event, just to geek out on the horses, here are some ideas for you and your patient non-horsey friends.
Update: I was a runner-up! I won a Breyer “Mini Me” of Big Lex.
