It’s just about time for the Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show at the Red Mile. The link to the live pay-per-view stream is below.
AND …
Hey, saddlebred and Kentucky horse scene fans – how many photos can you recognize?
Video tour of the pictures on the wall at Fennell’s tack shop, located near the Red Mile
Adjacent to Lexington, KY’s, famous and legendary Red Mile is the R.E. Fennell Co. tack shop, also known as Fennell’s.
On the walls above the merchandise is, for all intents and purposes, a museum of Saddlebreds, Standardbreds and other Kentucky-related horses of note.
The staff at Fennell’s was kind enough to allow me to shoot video during my visit. Also, don’t miss the photo and video tours they have up on their website.
FWIW, this isn’t an advertisement. Nor am I affiliated with the shop in any way. I just thought the store was interesting, and they were kind enough to let me video to my heart’s content.
Also, FWIW, the Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show is July 5 through 10 and can be viewed on a pay-per-view webcast on the American Saddle Horse Association website.
Notes on my video
The video is shaky. I am not a Steadicam operator. I used a Flip camcorder edited with the FlipShare software. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But if you’re expecting ESPN or Equitrekking quality (BTW, Darley, congrats on the Creative Arts Emmy nomination!), my video can’t quite come close to that kind of polish.
I also had to contend with glare from florescent lighting. Without the lights, though, the camera couldn’t have picked up anything and there would have been no movie.
Also, this is a longish video – about three and a half minutes. That’s a lot of time to pan across photos on a wall.
But I wanted fans of saddlebreds and racing to see as much as I could show.
If you’re into saddlebreds or racing, you might enjoy the glimpses you see.
So, tell me down in the Comments section … who all do you recognize?

It wouldn’t be fair for me to name them all. But I did see you pause for a while on Mr. Teater!

Hi, Charlie – Mr. Teater was the most recognizable rider to me. I remember seeing him in some old issues of National Horseman that I saw a long time ago and, of course, he and Wing Commander are forever linked.

Hi, smitty. I’m sure you saw ‘em. Confession time: my mind was busy multi-tasking – hold camera up hight, sweep it along slowwww, don’t trip over anything along the way, etc. While I did all this, I recognized some of the mega-famous photos of horses – the Derby winners (I have that print of Secretariat hanging behind me), Wing Commander and My My.

Hi, Lynda – Believe it or not, the music is one of the selections that came with the FlipShare editing software. I think it’s called “Guitar Ramble.” I’m so glad you enjoyed the video.
