As of this writing, the 2010 Kentucky Derby is less than a week away. I don’t know about you, but I like to plan ahead.
Here is what I could find, at this writing, for the broadcast schedules of the upcoming festivities.
As usual, all times listed are EDT. Check your local listings. Your mileage will vary.
April 30, Kentucky Oaks Day
- “Pursuit of the Crown” – 9:30 am EDT, HRTV
- “RaceDay America” – 10 am EDT, HRTV
- Relive Kentucky Derbies past as ESPN Classic runs selected races starting with 1975. Noon EDT. ESPN
- Live coverage of the “Kentucky Oaks – Ladies First,” 5 pm EDT. Bravo. (Post time for the Oaks is 5:45 EDT.)
- “The Edge,” 8 pm EDT, HRTV
May 1, Kentucky Derby Day
- “RaceDay America,” 9 am EDT, HRTV
- “Pursuit of the Crown,” 9:30 am EDT, HRTV
- “Today at the Kentucky Derby” – 11 am to 2 pm EDT, ESPN*
- Kentucky Derby undercard – 2 to 4 pm EDT, ESPN*
- Live coverage of the Kentucky Derby – 4 to 7 pm EDT, NBC (Post time for the Derby is at 6:24 pm EDT)
- Post-race coverage, 7 pm EDT, HRTV
* This is where “check your local listings” comes in. One could be for ESPN or ESPN2. Also, during the broadcast, I’m sure we’ll receive additional instructions about where to follow the rest of the action.
Also, in the interest of full disclosure – and if you haven’t read the previous post about me attending the 1983 Kentucky Derby – my husband works for ESPN. I just thought you should know.
His employer just happens to be covering the undercard for the Derby. No matter which network would be covering anything associated with the Kentucky Derby, I would be giving you the schedule for coverage. Ya dig?
Or I would refer you elsewhere for more information, which will happen soon.
You say you want to totally geek out on Derby stuff? Well, you’re in luck.
Also, HRTV has extensive morning Derby coverage all through Derby Week, so click on that link to take a look. If your cable system doesn’t carry the all-horse racing channel, it is available for a fee online.
Cindy Pearson Dulay, for About.com, compiled a wonderfully detailed guide that shows Triple Crown race coverage on TV.
Her guide shows all sorts of goodies, along with all the Derby Trail coverage and the current schedule for the other Triple Crown races this year, like:
- When to watch re-airs of Animal Planet’s “Jockeys”
- Which Kentucky Derbies ESPN Classic will re-broadcast and when
- When to watch some documentaries on both Animal Planet and CNBC about issues in horse racing
Another point I’d like to make in the interest of transparency is that I admit that I used her comprehensive article as a source for this post, along with the Kentucky Derby website.
So, get ready to set your DVRs, VHSs and make a list of the snacks you want in the house this weekend – because you won’t want to miss a moment of the action.
Part 3 of my memories of the 1983 Kentucky Derby series, about what it was like to attend a Kentucky Derby with a TV crew, will be next. I’ll post it in a couple of days.
