A fast heads up – I’m hosting a Horse Movie Drinking Game LIVE on Twitter on Thursday night at 10 pm EDT during the horse-related episode of “Royal Pains.”

It’ll be a TweetChat with the hashtag #HMDG, so you can follow along. And I’ve got some related info to help you prepare for the episode.

But I don’t drink

If you don’t want to consume alcohol, no problem – pick something else. Tea, M&Ms, Cheetos, Tab. Whatever floats your boat. Whatever it is, you consume it when you see the horsey faux pas, which we’ll watch for like hungry/thirsty little hawks.

Plus, the point of the Tweetchat is to help non-horsey fans of Royal Pains play along. My author friend Toni Andrews made that recommendation after she’d seen my Tweets (posts on Twitter)  talking about the episode.

FWIW, if you choose to consume alcohol, don’t do this and drive. I mean it. Or I’ll send Evan of “Royal Pains” to your jail cell to present his Powerpoint about HankMed.  Believe me, that would be the least of your troubles – but you wouldn’t think so at the time.

Twitter/Tweetchat?!?

Tweetchat is a website that lets you follow along with conversations marked by a #hashtag. For Thursday night, our hashtag will be #HMDG.

Yes, you do need a Twitter account. They’re easy and free to set up, and lots of interesting horse people (let alone folks talking about your other interests) are there.

Weren’t you going to bed early Thursday?

Yes, I’m still going to Saratoga Friday morning, but a bit later. So, I can stay up and romp on the Tweetchat.

More about the episode

Apparently, it’s based on the annual horse show the Hampton Classic, a hunter/jumper show that’s scheduled for later this month.

In preparation for the festivities, I signed on to follow the Royal Pains show Tweets (postings – @RoyalPains_USA) They posted a link to this Royal Pains photo.

It’s a photo of the doctor with a young girl dressed in correct attire for riding in hunter/jumper events. Don’t miss the caption because that’s telling for our game:

“This week, our super doctor helps out a horse jockey.”

Oh boy, oh boy! Take a sip/nibble, right there! Horse jockey? She’s not wearing racing silks. Or any of the other gear that jockeys wear when they’re working horses.

Yeah, but — you might say — I’ve seen people refer to any rider as “the jockey.”

Oh all right. Frankly, I have, too. But not a little girl who looks like she’s dressed for the local pony club show.

Right there – that’s a sip or a nibble. So, Thursday night should be easy pickins.

“This is stupid. The show is stupid”

Yes, I did see something like this on another online horse forum. But people love to learn. Horse people wish they’d learn correct procedures. Why can’t we have fun while doing both?

The deets again

Pick your favorite poison. Just because it’s a “drinking game” doesn’t mean you have to drink.

“Royal Pains.” Thursday night at 10 pm EDT. USA Network. Plus, get on Twitter or Tweetchat. Put #HMDG and follow #HMDG in every post.

Just for fun.

  1. So, I wasn’t around for the game on Twitter but I did watch the episode over the weekend. I must admit, I was seriously impressed with how well they did. My only complaint was that they seemed to be getting the Hampton Classic confused with the Kentucky Derby. The outfits, hats, and mint juleps (and aforementioned jockeys) are a Derby thing. I know the Hamptons is a ritzy area, but I haven’t ever seen anybody spectate at horse shows dressed like that. Scratch that; I just looked up pictures on Flickr, and discovered that they do dress like that … at least in the VIP tent!

  2. They really did do a good job overall, much to the chagrin of the group playing the game live. I was reduced to snarking on little things, like hairstyles, but nothing glaring that we could really hoot over.
