The historic Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show, the first jewel in the saddlebred Triple Crown, is in full swing from July 6 – 11 with both day and night classes. And we can watch it on pay-per-view over the Internet.
A video stream is available for those of us with broadband and Windows Media player capability.
So, what’s the big deal about the Junior League Show?
Since 1937
The horse show has been the junior league’s fundraiser for 72 years. (Another heads-up for travelers – the jubilee year will be in 2012. I bet the Junior League won’t let that 75th anniversary pass without fanfare.)
The front part of Lexington’s famous Red Mile is sectioned off in front of the grandstand as a show ring. Or, at least it was when I went when I was a child. So, the set up may have changed in the past (cough)ty years.
The show’s impact on the area
The show that draws about a thousand exhibitors attracts about 30,000 spectators. They drop a lot of money into Lexington businesses, and the various entry fees fund all sorts of Junior League charities to the tune of $10.4 million. Still, they manage to pay winners about $70,000 in prize money.
Watching the Pay-Per-View
Members of the American Saddlebred Horse Association receive a discount. But, if you fall into that category, you already know that. The rest of us pay $15 each night.
If you’re on a budget – pick one day
If you’d like to watch this show but aren’t nuts about paying the money to watch every night, I have some suggestions for you.
First, here’s a list of events and a class sheet. In case you’re interested in a particular class, listings start on page 18.
If you know someone showing in a particular division, look for that class. However, if they do well, you might want to watch them with bigger stakes on the line.
But, if you can only afford one day, pick one with your favorite class’s championship or stake.
If you have no particular favorite, go for Saturday. Or whichever weekend day works best with your schedule.
Watching one day will cost you $15 for both day and evening shows. That’s only a little more money than a full-price movie ticket for an entire days’s worth of viewing.
