Breyers and Barbies star in this animated invitation to a Derby party .

Most people hear the term “Derby party” and think of the luxury bashes with celebrities and the well-to-do on Derby Eve.

But Derby parties aren’t just for the rich. Or the grown-up.

For a lot of people, the Kentucky Derby is more of an excuse to party, than the object of celebration itself.

I don’t have a lot of information on these party videos that I found on YouTube.

Most don’t have any info about them, except for the notation that it is a Derby Party and perhaps some first names.

And I picked ones for which I wouldn’t have to run a language advisory. ;)

There are a few on YouTube that wouldn’t be appropriate for tender ears. Nor will they help the “stars” in their pursuit of respectable employment.

So, without further ado, here’s a video showcase of Derby parties on YouTube:

* A pre-Derby party

Every year, the Kentucky governor hosts a Derby breakfast in Frankfort, about a half hour drive from Louisville (maybe longer, though, on Derby Day. Crowds arrive early at the Downs.)

* Here’s the Kentucky Governor’s Derby Breakfast from 2007. Gov. Ernie Fletcher talks about meeting HRH Elizabeth I.

Upcoming Kids Derby Party in NE US

The Kids Barn at Pleasant View Stables will hold a Derby party from noon til 3 with hat decorating, a stick horse post parade and fun — all scheduled so everyone can get to a TV in time to watch the race.

I wish I could be there. but I’ll be at the Connecticut Fiction Fest instead. I’m working the registration desk, plus acting as a timer for some agent/editor meetings.

Since it’ll be held at a hotel, I might sneak off from the evening activities to hit the bar to watch the big race.

Of course, I’ll have DVRed (is that even a verb?) the coverage to watch at home when I can relax.

  1. Here I am commenting on my own blog.

Actually, I’m just updating the post. Here’s a link for those doing last-minute planning for a Derby party.

Oh, go ahead – you just know you want to throw a Derby party. It’s the springtime Super Bowl. Nobody has to fret about winter driving conditions on the way home. Even though they are sober, designated drivers. Anyway …

Go to a part of the Derby’s main website and click on http://www.kentuckyderbyparty.com/.

Recipes, ideas, maps to Derby parties, a forum. Oh my! Have fun.

  2. Again – commmenting on my own blog. :) Another update.

Does the whole party idea skeez you out? All that big-hat, blanket o’roses, mint julep excess?

Then, donate what you would have spent on a party to a horse shelter. The gang on the Chronicle of the Horse forum is all excited by this concept, especially in these times that are tight for horse rescues.
