Before we went to Saratoga, my friend Sheryl had never attended a horse race. She’s from Connecticut and rode hunter-jumpers for a while. She’d been to Saratoga for concerts, but not for the racing. She has seen “Jockeys” on Animal Planet.
I grew up in northern Kentucky and had been to both Latonia and River Downs several times each by the time I was 10. Since moving to Connecticut, I’ve attended two Kentucky Derbies, one Preakness Stakes and a Marlboro Cup (now known as the Jockey Club Gold Cup). I had never been to Saratoga, except to drive through it on the way to Montreal.
As an enthusiastic race fan, I wanted to be sure that she got a good taste of a great day at the track.
So. come on along with us.
On the video, you’ll see some of Breakfast at the Track. Later, I took her down to the paddock, up to the rail (my favorite place to watch the race) and down to the jockeys’ changing room door.
You’ll notice that we didn’t keep our mouths shut while the camera was rolling. My voice is more nasal and probably louder because I was doing the shooting.
FWIW, we’re already plotting our eventual return.
